LITTLE ROMANCES: LAYERED WITH NATURE

Curated by Deepti Rao

When I stumbled upon Jordanna Kalman’s instagram I was immediately pulled into a binging session of all her work. The mysteriously feminine black and white nudes are layered with other photographs, petals, slugs, mushrooms, dried flowers and even sparks of fire creating images that really draw you in.

In an interview with Fast Forward: Women in Photo, Kalman says that when she first started making nudes many of them were sexualized and censored by the internet which led her to intervene with her own variations. Her work also opens a conversation about how the female body should or should not be photographed and that very often it is the male gaze that determines this.

What I love about Kalman’s work is the experimental nature, and that it is all analogue. You don’t merely look at a photograph but you also observe Kalman’s process. To create one of her images Kalman places a fire cracker on the nipple of the woman in the image and sets it on fire.

In my head, this looked amazing! In reality when executed, I inhaled all this smoke and feel quite ill.

Her photobook Little Romances is definitely on my shopping list and I’m excited to follow the work of this inspiring artist. ↓
